Breakout Session 3: Surviving Shark Tank: From Roller Coaster to Rocketship
In 2011 the Torrey brothers had a vision to start a company that could do well while also doing good. From this idea came umano, a clothing brand now known for being both fashionable and philanthropic. Alex and Jonathan Torrey have focused their company on art education and giving back to the communities in which they work. They have accomplished this by selling fashion basic and in exchange for every product sold, give a backpack full of school supplies to empower a kid to unleash their creativity. After giving up everything to start umano, the Torrey brothers had to work hard to be successful. While umano has expanded well, and quickly, the road to success was not always easy or clear for the company. Hear straight from the Torreys about how setbacks can turn into learning experiences that lead to success.Today umano is a featured brand at Bloomingdales and other specialty boutiques, has been featured on Shark Tank, and as of 2015 the company had given over 20,000 backpacks. Join us at the umano Breakout Session to see first hand how social entrepreneurship can lead to success.

Join ShopAthens on Instagram for the movie screening event that caps off The ShopAthens #Vote4Local Instagram Challenge, a photo-puzzle contest and celebration of local style, fashion and shopping at locally owned small businesses in Athens, Georiga! Grand Prize items will be announced in the weeks leading up to the drawing on Friday, April 1 at 7PM.

 ABOUT THE FILM:

“We all get dressed for Bill,” says Vogue editrix Anna Wintour.
The “Bill” in question is 80+ New York Times photographer Bill Cunningham. For decades, this Schwinn-riding cultural anthropologist has been obsessively and inventively chronicling fashion trends and high society charity soirées for the Times Style section in his columns “On the Street” and “Evening Hours.” Documenting uptown fixtures (Wintour, Tom Wolfe, Brooke Astor, David Rockefeller—who all appear in the film out of their love for Bill), downtown eccentrics and everyone in between, Cunningham’s enormous body of work is more reliable than any catwalk as an expression of time, place and individual flair. In turn, Bill Cunningham New York is a delicate, funny and often poignant portrait of a dedicated artist whose only wealth is his own humanity and unassuming grace.

My Athens Fashion Show

My Athens and Olives & Wax Vintage present The Repurposing Project, a fashion show featuring Athens’s incredible talent and commitment to sustainability in a totally new way!

We give designers a bag of old clothes. They have three weeks to turn it into something new.

The Repurposing Project will be April 3, at the Georgia Theatre, from 6-9. The show will feature two dozen designers, showcasing the talent that defines Athens. Each designer will present one look — stitched, cut and dyed from their bag of used garments — and our panel of judges will select a winner!

My Athens will also be debuting our 2016 photo gallery at the show, telling our story of the city over the last year through photos. Volume IV of our photo book collection, featuring the 2016 gallery images, will be for sale at the event as well.

Following the show, stick around for a dance party on the main floor of the Georgia Theatre to celebrate all the talented designers and models who are working so hard to make this possible.

Join us for a night celebrating the incredible amount of creativity in the Athens fashion scene and support up and coming designers from all over the city! Get tickets here.
